Welcome to our new Chair!

We are delighted to announce we have appointed Martyn Evans as Non-Executive Chair of our Board.

Martyn has more than 20 years of property and regeneration experience including board and executive committee positions at the specialist mixed-use developer Cathedral Group and then at the listed property development and investment company U+I, which was formed through the merger of Cathedral Group and Development Securities in 2016.

He is currently Estate Development Director at the 1,200-acre Dartington Hall Estate in Devon, running a programme of regeneration on a Medieval estate that was established in 1925 as an experimental rural community delivering community housing, social enterprise, retail, a live Arts programme and an extensive education offer.

Martyn has extensive experience of working with local communities to deliver large-scale development projects. By bringing cultural and creative community engagement to the fore in property development, he has become a respected authority on facilitating sustainable urban design and placemaking.

Martyn is also Deputy Chair of the London Festival of Architecture and co-founder, with former RIBA President Jane Duncan, of the Young Architects and Developers Alliance (YADA), a networking and learning programme that brings young architects and developers closer together. He is also a regular columnist for BD and has contributed to The Architects’ Journal and Estates Gazette.

He takes over the Brick by Brick Chair role from Jayne McGivern, who has stepped down following her appointment as Executive Vice President for Development and Construction at the Madison Square Garden Company.

Colm Lacey, our CEO and Managing Director, said:

“I am delighted to welcome Martyn to the Board at an incredibly exciting time for the company. Brick by Brick has established itself as a market leader in developing small sites responsibly, with a focus on beautifully designed and affordable housing. Martyn brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Board which will help us continue to grow and innovate, and deliver real benefits to Croydon residents”.

Commenting on his appointment, Martyn said: “Delivering high quality, affordable homes is one of the most acute challenges we face, particularly in a period of great economic and political uncertainty. Brick by Brick has pioneered the delivery of such housing, rapidly building an industry leading reputation for design quality, innovative thinking and practical delivery. I am excited to chair their Board at a time of significant expansion for the company and as it continues to build its delivery pipeline with admirable speed.”

The appointment of Martyn Evans as chair to sit alongside Managing Director Colm Lacey on the Board is part of a refresh of our board membership. Croydon Council, Brick by Brick’s sole shareholder, is also set to nominate two new representatives to the board in the coming weeks.

For those of you who don’t know, Brick by Brick was established in 2016 by Croydon Council and aims to deliver 2000 new homes by 2022 and 500 per year thereafter.
